No longer "Opposition", but "Government"!

Tricia and Bob seems to have stayed up all night (the Builder went on for 48 hours non-stop it seems!).

Tricia summarizes a milestone day in Malaysian politics:

"The Opposition has gained governance of FIVE STATES, FORMING STATE GOVERNMENTS in Kelantan (PAS), Penang (DAP-PKR-PAS), Kedah (PAS), Perak (DAP-PKR) and Selangor (DAP-PKR).  Next, Opposition has successfully denied the Barisan National coalition two thirds majority at Parliament level!

"We shall no longer be calling them "opposition" but "governments", because simply, that's who they shall be, come tomorrow morning."

She also commented that possibly some/many urban Malaysia - who traditionally voted BN - chose not to attend or even spoil their votes in order to punish the incumbent regime.

A friend called me up this morning and commented as to how the Malaysian voting public has matured. No longer are we AFRAID to punish the government, a corollary, perhaps, of the greater willingess to connect, to voice out, to blog, to engage.

We can exercise our democratic right to tell leaders what we really think and leave whoever we want shattered.

What's interesting, too, is that the main newspapers can't seem to explicitly say that the 'Barisan Nasional has lost its two-thirds majority', prefering to remark that it will 'form the next government with a simple majority' and, of course, that 'this proves that democracy works in Malaysia'.

I'm not in terminal danger. My gaping wound shows that my heart is still pumping and my blood is still flowing.

This is all quite exciting. I feel like a kid who, only being just introduced to football, is at the grandstands of an English Premier League match.
