You Ain't What You Eat

A few minutes before I had to pry my son away from the drums and leave, I heard Alpha Lim present a summary of his group's discussion on '2nd Generation Christians' during the latest Emergent Malaysia 'Open' Meeting last nite: We should pass along our HUNGER for God to the next generation to complement the BELIEFS we inevitably want them to embrace.

I must confess I've never heard it phrased that way before, and must thank Alpha and his team for presenting it so eloquently. I can't wait to shout this out from the pulpit (if ever I'm back up there, *smile*). How can we do this? How can we transfer some of our passion? Funny thing is I think it's easy. Yet to this extent the situation becoms more risky. Let me explain.

I think our longing for God comes out in our lives everyday. We can't fake what's really important to us. Our children watch us, listen to us, copy us, and wait upon us so much so that if we don't have a burning love for God and the world, they 'pick up' on this. If we love money, our children will too, eventually. We can't hide what we hunger for. And what drives us will also be the primary factor driving our kids (their maturity and 'independent thining' later in life notwithstanding).

There's so much to write about the gathering, but I'm stuck in a Net Cafe with too little cafeine in my veins and a meeting coming up shortly.

It's not "You are what you eat", but "You are who you eat with".
