Staying in Q2

Had an engaging time with the youth class today. Led the session on time management and was so glad to be able to share Stephen Covey's time-management matrix.

Seeking to live in Quadrant 2 sounds like a refreshing, disicpline-building challenge. I appreciate Covey's insight that when we devote more time in Quadrant 2, the other quadrants become start to shrink(!), so this matrix is really a dynamic one. What's scary is how most of us live in either Quadrant 1 or 3, with Quadrant 4 being a constant temptation.

And at this point we could at the following into Q2:

  • prayer
  • study
  • exercise
  • time with loved ones
  • journaling
  • conversations with people we don't know
  • thinking

But a tricky thing is identifying what's important in your life. Towards this end we'll need worldviews, meaning-construction, personal roles, 'ideals', etc. not to mention constant reflection on these areas.

In a word, self management is the foundation of time management. Know and reaffirm what really matters in life and that's big step towards scheduling one's piorities (as opposed to prioritising one's schedules!).
