Visited a coupla new blogs today. One of it was David Warlick's 2 Cents' Worth.. There's this simple gem of a paragraph in the post entitled One of Those Way Out There Ideas:
Every fifth year, all teachers take a paid sabbatical. They can take on an internship related to what they teach for that year. ..Or they can propose a project to produce some significant advancement the practice (a new textbook, new type of textbook, significant research, instructional materials, etc.). The result would be that after every five years, teachers would re-enter their classroom re-connected to the world that we are preparing our children for.
Notice the key objective: It's to be re-connected to the world of the students. Self-rejuvenation and greater learning is another benefit, of course, but that isn't the main thing. Ultimately, so the concept goes, one takes a (reasonably long) break for those one serves.
Think it's relevant for pastors? Bosses? Parents?

Hmmm... but how do universities handle their professors going on sabbaticals? Regardless, i think a good CONCEPT can birth an infinite number of IDEAS, even as we must bear in mind the need to be down-to-earth and practical.
And yes we young ones mustn't ignore the adivce of those with decade(s)+ experience! ;>) |

I like the idea that teachers/lecturers whatever lah are being connected to the real world again before they try and impart all their wisdom to students, what I recall from my uni days is that some had no idea how to apply what they were teaching outside of academia, that has it's place of course but to be honest only for a small portion of the population, Sivin I hate to be a topper but I have been working since 1980 which is a very scary number for all you young flers, am not wise but perhaps have some experience ;-) |

That would involve a massive reorganization of how shcools are funded, at least in the US. I really doubt you could pass a school issue when your reason is that you need to have an extra 20% of salaries to cover teachers who will not be in class.
Ditto for about any other profession. Who pays for both the replacement pastor as well as the pastor on Sabbatical? Most churches have just enough to cover the one.
Ditto bosses and just about any other profession. I would take it, for sure, but I recognize such an expenditure would probably put my company under as well.
And if it was an unpaid Sabbatical, I would have to change my address to under a bridge somewhere. Or I really would "walk the earth, like Caine in Kung Fu." |
